Bart was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended Sidney Lanier High School and tried out for the football team in his sophomore year. After two weeks, he decided to quit. His father, a labor foreman and Master Sergeant in the Air Force, gave him the option of playing football or working in the family garden. Bart chose football.
He went on to play for the University of Alabama and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers during the 17th round in 1956. He played 16 years for the Packers and won five NFL Championships, including the first two Super Bowls, under the leadership of Coach Vince Lombardi. While he was named Super Bowl MVP in 1967 and 1968 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977, he is remembered by his perseverance, character, and leadership.
